FAA Test Hazard Analysis

FAR No.:

25.203

FAR Title:

Stall Characteristics

Risk Level:

High

Maneuver Title:

Recovery Chute Functional Test

Maneuver Description:

Ground test of stall/spin recovery chute.

1. Accelerate down the runway centerline.
2. At 60-80 kts, select idle power.
3. Deploy chute.
4. After inflation, jettison chute.

Hazard:

Departing runway surface

Cause(s):

1. 1. Stall/spin chute may provide significant pitch or yaw moment
2. Chute may drag on runway when deployed

Mitigation(s):

1.1 1. Deployment test will be performed at heavy weight and forward center of gravity
2. Deployment test will be performed with crosswind less than 5 knots and on runway centerline
3. Chute deployment will be performed with engines in IDLE thrust to preclude plume impingement
4. Runway to be used will be surveyed
5. Runway will be swept of foreign objects after test.
6. Proper installation of chute canister and tail cone will be verified
7. Runway observers required

Warning: It is imperative that this information be applied by a knowledgeable flight test professional given the inherently hazardous nature of these activities. This data is general and all items may not apply. Application may require additional research to understanding the safe approach and mitigation sequence for a specific flight test situation.
